The picture is smarter about using music to communicate a sense of place than any movie I've seen in a very long time, as well as to get laughs: the hustler's funk classic ''Slide'' by Slave plays in a clothing store run by a flashy pimp named Money Mike (Katt Williams), whose spotted fur outfit suggests he has used 90 of the 101 Dalmatians to make it.
''Friday After Next,'' which opens nationwide today, assembles a great group of songs, from up-to-the-minute rap to a sweet pack of R & B Christmas classics by Donny Hathaway, the Temptations and Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. (Amusingly, his low-ambition Craig of ''Friday'' is someone his Calvin Palmer from ''Barbershop'' might not have much tolerance for.)

Between ''Friday'' and ''Barbershop,'' Ice Cube has a series of films that can keep him in, to borrow a phrase, gin and juice for a long time. Their genre is distinctly different from the black-middle-class comedies of the last few years - including Cube's other current vehicle, ''Barbershop'' - films that are a way of broadening the social base of African-American comedies. No doubt the stars of ''Friday After Next'' aspire to be ghetto-fabulous, though they're far more ghetto than fabulous. He actually gets in a ''slap ya mama'' joke, which gets the biggest groan - and laugh - in the trailer. John Witherspoon's role as Craig's dad, which turns shamelessness into a comic style, is closer to Pigmeat Markham than anything else. The trouble with movies like those in the ''Friday'' series is that their success can lead to a need to inflate their importance, inviting pretentious descriptions like ''folkloric'' when ''Friday'' is much closer to chitlin circuit comedy. I'm not even sure the funny but slovenly ''Friday After Next'' legally qualifies as a movie - it was photographed like a drive-by, and the lighting seems to change from shot to shot, as if the film is being developed before your very eyes.Īs crude and rude as much of it is - a lot of this current ''Friday'' is sloppier than Ice Cube's original Jheri Curl - the first third is front-loaded with laugh-guaranteed nonstop jokes, and a good-size piece of its running time is consumed by a very cool animated credits sequence, filled with details like a ''Hollyweed'' sign up in the Hills.Ī single detail during the robbery will be enough to bring down the house: Craig's lowlife cousin, Day-Day (Mike Epps), snoozes through the break-in, reciting in his sleep a wish list of Christmas goodies, which makes Chico, the bull terrier dozing next to him, lick his chops.
One hesitates to say ''newest,'' since most of the jokes probably predate Fred Flintstone. This scene is a real crack-up, as is much of the first 20 minutes or so of ''Friday After Next,'' the latest in the ''Friday'' series. The theft is perhaps the year's most audacious slapstick sequence, in which a larcenous neighborhood Santa breaks into Craig's apartment and beats the sweat off Craig with a Christmas tree. ''We was jacked by Santa Claus,'' Craig (Ice Cube) says to the bored cops who show up after he's been robbed of his Christmas presents.
